I had some time, on my flight this morning, so I thought I share my thoughts, regarding making the plunge into the mirrorless realm. Now, I’ve seen a lot of well know photographers making the transition to mirrorless and I can’t say I blame them. It’s a great concept that just makes sense. One photographer even shot a video for the Sony A6000, and I have to say it was very compelling; the size, weight, manufacturer of lenses (Zeiss), and last but not least, features. Why not just shoot directly to the sensor, instead of off a mirror ? Do we really need a mirror or view finder. And the concept of WUSIWUG (what you see is what you get) on the display will cut down on editing time, sweet.
One of the things that really grabbed my attention, was the Wi-Fi capabilities and the ability to connect to social media sites such as: Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. As a photographer, this is a great concept, for getting you pictures out into cyber world, ahead of the crowd. But it also allows the user to use his or her Smart Phone as a remote, which I must say is pretty cool.
So, what is one to do, jump on the band wagon, scrap all your lenses and accessories, and buy a Sony or hold out. Now, I’m not talking the 4:3 cropped sensor that the majority of manufactures build. I’m talking the Big Boy, full frame mirror-less. I am a Nikon fan and I love their lenses. I’ve had about 6 Nikons over the years and I wouldn’t trade them, for the world. If you’re a Canon or Pentax person, I am sure you love you cameras, just the same. After looking at some past receipts, I have accumulated, around $10k in lenses. So, saying goodbye to them and purchasing new ones, just to change vendors would be a waste, in my opinion. Your results may differ.
Another tidbit that I would like to share is each manufacturer pretty much mimics the other. So, even though you brand doesn’t do a full frame camera, in mirror-less, guess what, give it some time, they will, in time.
After giving it some serious thought, I think I’m going to tough it out and be patient and get what I want, because right now what I want is only a dream right now, waiting to hit production.
I hope I have not bored you too much. I had a lot of fun writing this one like all of my blogs. I trust I have given you some valuable tips to think about, before planning your next shoot. It’s not all bad, just be clear and informative, it will save you a lot of headaches. Remember nothing is set in stone and there is not a perfect formula, so go out and have some fun.
